Selective breeding Chicken
When production animals are bred selectively, characteristics that can maintain and improve the animal's health and well-being are always taken into consideration alongside production properties. Broiler chickens have been bred selectively for meat production. Selective breeding focuses on the birds' health, suitability for meat production, resistance to disease, foot health and good structural features in other regards. Meat inspections carried out in Atria's production chain in 2011 found a very low rate of foot defects, which affected only 0.035 per cent of cases. Selective breeding of chickens is not undertaken in Finland – we purchase all of the chickens for our chains from our partners.
